Cycling In Snow

This is my cycling ride on a snow day by the Hudson River with views of the New York City Skyline in the background. I often do the same route but on this day in the snow, the whole vibe was different.

Nothing beats riding through fresh snow… The feeling of tires plowing through it is something I eagerly look forward to! And then you constantly keep skidding around which makes the experience even more playful and exciting!! 🌨️🚲🌨️

The whole snowy white atmosphere…
The very unique calm snow brings with it (almost like nature’s own noise-canceling system! 🎧)
The empty outdoors and solitude…
All bundled with the joy of playing with your bike!!
A truly incredible experience unlike any other!! ❄️🚴‍♂️❄️

While cycling in snow may seem like a wild idea, it comes with its own unique benefits.

Go for the views

Snow makes familiar routes feel brand new. It’s like biking through a soft, quiet world with way fewer crowds. You might even feel like a kid again playing in the snow.

Beat the blues & lift the mood

Going out cycling in snow is the best way to beat the winter blues through the rush of exercise and the boost of endorphins

Boost your physical abilities

Cold weather forces the body to work harder to stay warm, which can boost metabolism and burn more calories compared to riding in milder weather. Cycling in snow is also slower and more demanding, so it challenges your stamina and builds mental grit. What’s more? While riding on slippery, snowy surfaces we engage our core more, helping improve overall coordination and strength.

Show your care for our environment

Cycling specially for short distances can save emissions from cars and also from heating run within the vehicles thus benefitting our environment

Please take the right precautions though!!

While cycling in snow can be immensely rewarding, please keep take the right precautions while doing so. Here are few tips for ensuring you have a safe and joyous snow ride

  • Use studded tires for better grip
  • Keeping your tire pressure low helps with better traction
  • Ensure ample coverage with your clothes but try to use breathable, moisture-wicking layers for more comfort
  • Ride slower and brake earlier than usual
  • Keep your chain clean and lubricated to avoid the damage snow and slush can bring to the bike
