That experience of cycling in the night!

When it’s dark outside, and the moon shines bright… don’t stay indoors – just ride outside!

– Night cycling lover in me

Who said outdoors are just meant for daytime? If you see your surroundings every day, a night ride can surprise you by giving an entirely different perspective. Its when you only see what’s important – the path, the skyline and the sky itself. The other side of the coin which you are missing until you see it.

And when you think about it, a night ride experience is not so much different than an early morning ride. Yes the views cannot be more contrasting. However, a little late in the night, I still experience the calm and rejuvenation I experience early in the morning. You can still push your peddle and experience the wind all around amongst the solace…

Cycling in the nigh surely offers some unique perspectives. With fewer vehicles and relatively cooler temperature around, you experience a quieter, more relaxed ride. And with everything slowing down all around, it is almost gives a meditative and therapeutic feel after a long intense day.

To fully enjoy these benefits though, we should absolutely take the precautions night cycling demands.

Night riding is awesome — if you stay safe. Here’s what you must do:

Be Visible

Its of utmost importance that we be clearly seen on the road. The following accessories will help us in the same

  • Front Light (White): Bright enough to see and be seen (at least 300 lumens for city riding; more for dark roads).
  • Rear Light (Red): Flashing or steady — just make sure it’s visible from a distance.
  • Reflectors: On pedals, wheels, and backpack if possible.
  • Reflective Clothing or Gear: Reflective bands, jackets, or vests work wonders.

Be cautious

Cycling in the night demands being extra cautious and aware about your surroundings

  • Stick to well-lit routes and avoid any pitch-dark or deserted areas.
  • Be predictable on the road and avoid any sudden moves, especially near other vehicles.
  • Ride slow as obstacles are harder to see during the night.

Take these precautions and make the most of your next cycling ride taken at night!
